When you have been in a trade for as long as I have, you stop getting excited by the ubiquitous - no matter how beautiful or classic. Case in point - the die-stamp amulets. I love them. Tremendously. However, perhaps because they are still being made the same way as before or are found frequently, there is no real thrill in buying them. Nothing exciting.
And then, once in a while and in the strangest of places you come across one that surprises you. A die-stamp amulet the likes of which you have not seen before. When that happens, the endorphins rush in and I jump to make it a part of my collection. I've managed to build a decent collection over the years- sharing a few in this sale.
This pendant here- now this is one amazing find. I've never ever seen a vermillion specked pendant such as this one. Though the figures on the amulet are worn out, one can clearly make out the three images of 'Hoi Mata' (devi/goddess), each enclosed within a five-sided mandir/temple (read more about Hoi Mata in 'Trivia' below). This well-worn charm carries with it the wishes of those that worried this soulful piece.

Trivia: Often identified as a form of Shakti, Hoi Mata is one of the many mother Goddess worshipped throughout India, presiding over the well being of the family. Hoi Mata images can be found across the villages and cities of North India- Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The mud walls of rural homes are painted on festivals, and blessings of Hoi (or Ahoi) are invoked for the well-being and protection of children by their mothers. Hoi is also worshipped as Sanjhi in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and Himachal Pradesh.
Please note: (1) All the jewellery in this collection is vintage, and thus neither new nor in mint condition. Wear, dents, scratches, oxidation etc. are in keeping with the age of the jewellery.
(2) All the jewellery has been gently cleaned to remove surface dirt and oils but not the patina- which in our view adds immensely to the appeal of vintage pieces. While in great condition (none of the jewellery is broken/chipped/in need of repair), all were previously owned by someone else, and while not perfect each is full of old history and charm. Please use accompanying photographs to make your decision and be sure to ask any questions you may have before purchase.
(3) It is also worth reminding that since the jewellery is shot in close-up mode, the pieces may look bigger than actual size. Conversely, some large pieces may look smaller in pictures. Always refer to the mentioned dimensions.
